What Is a Search Space Analysis? (And Why It Matters More Than a Standard SEO Audit)

Digital Advice, SEO News

Here’s an uncomfortable question for anyone who’s just paid for an SEO audit: did it tell you anything you didn’t already suspect?

Most audits are checklists which are generated by someone running your site through a crawler, exporting a spreadsheet of broken links and missing alt tags, and handing it back with a covering note that says “fix these.” That’s not evidence-led work, that’s a symptom list. And treating symptoms without diagnosing the cause is how you end up paying for the same audit again in twelve months.

A Search Space Analysis is Maratopia’s answer to that problem, and it starts from a different question entirely. Not “what’s broken on this site?” but “what does the entire search space around this business actually look like, and where in it are you visible, invisible, or losing ground to something that isn’t even a website anymore?”

The search space has changed. Most audits haven’t.

Standard audits were built for a world where ranking on page one meant someone clicked through. That world is going. According to Statista-sourced data, roughly 62% of Google searches in the UK now end without a single click to any website. Searches that trigger an AI Overview push that figure even higher, with zero-click rates around 83% on those queries.

That means a growing share of the “search space” isn’t blue links at all. It’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels and answer boxes, all deciding what gets surfaced (and quoted) before your site ever enters the conversation. Independent tracking of 13 billion Google searches by iPullRank found the zero-click rate has been climbing steadily since AI Overviews expanded to more than 100 countries in October 2024, with December 2025 the highest zero-click month on record.

A checklist audit wasn’t designed to investigate any of that. A Search Space Analysis is.

What a Search Space Analysis actually does

Think of it as the forensic version of an audit, and instead of scoring your site in isolation, we map the whole crime scene. This means your rankings, your competitors’ rankings, AI Overview citations in your sector, and the technical foundations underneath all of it.

1. Visibility mapping across traditional and AI search

Where you rank in classic organic results, and separately, whether AI Overviews and AI answer engines are citing you, a competitor, or nobody at all for the queries that matter to your business.

2. Competitive gap analysis

Not a list of competitor keywords, but the specific search space they own and you don’t, with the evidence for why.

3. Technical root-cause investigation

Crawl errors, indexation problems and site architecture issues aren’t reported as isolated fixes. They’re traced back to the business impact they’re actually causing. This is where the groundwork from our technical SEO work comes in, because AI Overviews and traditional rankings both depend on a search engine being able to crawl and understand your site properly in the first place.

4. Named findings, not vague scores

Every conclusion is tied to a specific page, a specific query, or a specific number. If we can’t back a claim with evidence, we don’t make it.

This is what we mean when we talk about being a forensic SEO agency, not an agency that runs software and rebrands the output.

Why this matters more now than it did two years ago

Two years ago, an AI visibility audit UK businesses might have needed would have sounded like a niche add-on. It isn’t anymore. If your business depends on being found, and depends on Google for customer acquisition the way most SMEs do, then not knowing whether AI Overviews mention you is the same blind spot a broken sitemap used to be, just newer and less understood.

That’s the gap most SEO audit agencies in London haven’t caught up with. They’re still measuring a search landscape that’s roughly a third smaller than it used to be, and reporting it as though nothing’s changed.

The bottom line

A standard audit tells you what’s wrong with your site. A Search Space Analysis tells you where you stand in the actual search landscape your customers are using today, traditional and AI-driven, and exactly what evidence supports that conclusion.

If you want to know whether your site would hold up under that kind of scrutiny, that’s precisely the investigation we run.
